I've got a baritone GDAE viola in front of me right now for a tailpiece replacement, integrated fine tuners instead of chunky outboard ones. If that change makes a difference to the sound, I'll try to convince the owner hi, Jen! It's fun to play. Shoulder seam all glued, no more need for probing with ahem palette knife.
I haven't yet decided whether I like it better with a viola or cello bow Not quite sure, but I think the D-turned-E is an Evah. I think I hope I have a replacement or two somewhere.
I called up Shar or was it Southwest? I then actually went further, and got an almost-full set of regular viola strings C-G-D to overstretch, and tried setting up the instrument with an octave-viola string only for the G. It worked, but there was a clear difference. Octave strings are not exactly inexpensive. I've kept the viola strings for back-up, and counted the experiment toward the overall cost of the instrument.
Oh, a word to the wise - anyone who chooses to go the octave route should be careful when ordering strings. Super-Sensitive is the company that makes octave viola and octave fiddle strings. However , they also make a line of regular strings, named I'm completely confused now fiddlejen. If I may, since Jen's instrument is right here: it's tuned as a baritone violin. In the next room is my Bellafina "chin cello," which is an octave viola. Quote from: Mina the fiddler on Dec 11, , PM.
Fiddlejen, thank you for that last sentence re. So to be clear, is the consensus that a Violas don't like being tuned up to violin pitch, whatever the strings. Pages: [ 1 ] 2 All Go Up. SMF 2. However steel strings might be OK. You would have to watch the downward pressure on the belly.
I was just curious if it could be done. As a long time guitarist Ive used many different tunings , so when I learned of different tunings for violin, I started wondering if the viola could be tuned as a violin. I read somewhere that violins are sometimes tuned as viloa to compensate for smaller players. Quote from: polkat on Dec 01, , AM I suspect that you want to play violin but only have a viola.
No, I own a violin, just a bit of mad scientist in me Logged giannaviolins Someone with 5 blobs Posts: 6, Total Badges: 24 Badges: View All Re: viola tuned as violin « Reply 8 on: Dec 01, , PM » The further away from standard tension a string goes, the worse it works. Electric violins don't seem to care much if they have 14" viola strings on them But you can string up an electric violin as a cello with the right strings, which doesn't work too well on an acoustic.
I have bunch of old gut violin strings that I like to try out a viola. Any feedback will be much appreciated.
 More sharing options I don't think it would work as violin strings are two short for the viola. Kat Dunham Posted June 20, Maybe I'm wrong and if I am, sorry.

I have used a viola Eudoxa G and A to get a little more juice out of the instrument since Eudoxa is already incredibly low tension. Another reason to use a viola string is if your peg keeps slipping. Slightly winding the string against the pegbox will keep the peg better in place, and sometimes you will need a viola string for that extra string length to wind.
It wasn't built like a viola but it had a relatively deep sound. Even the C string was rich and juicy. Of course it didn't sound as deep as a real viola but it was nice. Plus, it was quite a good student violin. I checked some YouTube videos of 14" viola samples.
Although this is not a particularly accurate measure of sound quality, I wasn't toally impressed with the sound quality and didn't think there was anything special about it soundwise. I have to admit that sometimes it may actually be better to restring a violin as a viola if the only fractional violas that are commonly available are entry-level student models that are quite crappy. This is, unfortunately, the situation in my area, so sometimes it's much easier and much cheaper to find a decent violin and put viola strings on than to spend thousands of dollars on a fractional viola.
Although he put the sound post back, the tone of the violin remained "dark" for some years. It was quite a surprise when I discovered that the instrument no longer sounded "dark", and Eudoxa were better for it than Golden Spiral.
