Kurt told Charlie and me at the same time that Gemma was going to die at the hands of her son," she said. Sagal, 60, said it was "extremely emotional" shooting that last scene after having worked alongside Hunnam and her husband, show creator Kurt Sutter, since Sagal added that by turning her back to Jax, so he could shoot her in the back, she was going out a mother first and foremost, no matter what.
She needs him to help her do that, and to do it for himself," she said. As for having two iconic characters under her belt, Sagal admitted she "never thought that would happen again" after "Married With Children.
Through it all, Sagal delivered a bravura performance as Gemma, imbuing the character with a tragic humanity often at odds with her duplicitous, Lady MacBeth-style puppeteering. Though her character eventually paid the ultimate price for her actions, there's little question that Sagal herself was paid well for her scene-stealing work on Sons of Anarchy. It's a safe bet that Sagal's Sons residuals are continuing to add to her fortune, which was founded long before Sons of Anarchy premiered.
Sagal was a well-established presence in the Hollywood landscape for a couple of decades before she ever appeared on the beloved FX biker drama Sons of Anarchy. She initially made a name for herself as a singer backing up the likes of Bob Dylan and Bette Midler before eventually landing a choice acting gig opposite Mary Tyler Moore in Mary. A veteran TV actress, Sagal is beloved by many for her repeated portrayal of strong, bold women.
While the extent and exact nature Sagal's injuries are not known at present, the assurances of her close friend indicate that she'll be released from the hospital sooner than later. No official announcement has been made, but presumably filming on Tattered Hearts will be placed on hold while Sagal recovers. It is also likely we will learn more about the exact nature of what happened as the authorities continue their investigation. In the meantime, we hope Sagal has a speedy recovery and that she is able to return to work on Tattered Hearts and any other projects she's currently involved with very soon.
