MC Sports' large-format stores carry sporting goods and apparel in many categories -- from hunting, fishing and camping equipment, to running shoes, kayaks, treadmills, workout clothes, and team sports equipment. Sporting goods chain MC Sports is closing all of its stores, including locations in Springfield and Branson. The Michigan-based company, known legally as Michigan Sporting Goods Distributors, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week.
President and CEO Bruce Ullery said in a bankruptcy filing that the company's business "like many of its peers in the sporting goods retail space, has been impacted by adverse business trends, including the rapid migration of sales from traditional brick and mortar retailers to online resellers, the expansion of competing distribution channels and specialty retailers, and changing consumer preferences.
Ullery said he had determined that a restructuring was not feasible, particularly after a reinvestment and remodeling project failed to generate adequate results. The company employs more than 1, full-time and part-time associates at its 68 stores throughout seven states in the Midwest, according to the filing.
In Missouri, the company has stores in Columbia, St. Joseph and Warrensburg in addition to Springfield and Branson.
